Making waves ahead of London International Shipping Week
Quadrise Fuels International is a proud member of the UK Chamber of Shipping, the trade association which works with governments, international organisations and other stakeholder groups to champion the interests of the UK shipping industry on behalf of its members. Ahead of London International Shipping Week 2021 (13 – 17 September) the Chamber has joined forces with ASN Media to produce ‘Making Waves: The Future of Shipping’, a programme telling the story of the industry’s journey to a sustainable future.
The programme will contain interviews and special reports from the professionals, organisations and companies – including Quadrise – that are driving efforts across the sector to tackle climate change and reduce shipping’s footprint on the environment.
The Quadrise segment of the programme focuses on bioMSAR™, our new lower carbon fuel, which incorporates renewable glycerine as a clean fuel component. It features discussions on the development of bioMSAR™ and results of combustion testing on our diesel engine at the Aquafuel facility. There are interviews with our CEO, Jason Miles, and Chairman, Mike Kirk, as well as our recently promoted Project Manager, Matthew Bridgeman, and Senior Chemist, Laura Ward, who is based at the Quadrise Research Facility.
Recent results from VTT testing on a Wärtsilä 4-stroke diesel engine show bioMSAR™ could reduce CO2 emissions by 26% versus HFO. For context, switching a large vessel consuming 25,000 tons of HFO to bioMSAR™ would reduce CO2 emissions by 23,000 tons on an annual basis, equivalent to the emissions from 11,000 average petrol cars. With the marine sector contributing 940 million tons of CO2 emissions globally (2.5% of the world’s total CO2 emissions), the adoption of bioMSAR™ could play a significant role in the decarbonisation of the international shipping industry.
Huge strides have already been made by the marine sector as part of its commitment to improving environmental sustainability, with the sector’s CO2 emissions reducing by 30% since 2008, but there is much more work still to do. Ahead of the much-anticipated UN Climate Change Conference, COP26, taking place in Glasgow this November, ‘Making Waves: The Future of Shipping’ tells an important story of the issues and opportunities facing the shipping industry at a time of environmental crisis, whilst highlighting those dedicated to creating a cleaner future for shipping.
